Basketball camp is an excellent way to advertise your team, mentor new players, and keep existing players engaged during the offseason. If you want to start your own camp or enhance an existing program, review our basketball camp ideas for inspiration.

1. Set a Structure

As you begin putting together ideas, think about what you want your camp structure to look like. A typical camp day includes time for check-ins and check-outs, warm-ups, building skills, games, and breaks. You need to manage the balance of these activities carefully to help players learn and build skills while having fun.

Don’t forget about transition time. How long does it take to put away equipment or travel from one room to another? Build that into your schedule.

Depending on the size of your camp, consider grouping kids by age or skill level to provide appropriate instruction. Younger children or more novice players may have a hard time keeping up with experienced teens in mixed-skills settings.

2. Run Drills for Basketball Fundamentals

What drills or games are best for varying skill levels? We recommend starting with drills that cover the fundamentals. Try incorporating various categories to build well-rounded players:

  • Shooting drills, like 1:1 shooting or fastbreak shooting
  • Ball-handling drills, like speed dribbling or random traps
  • Passing drills, like pair passing or monkey in the middle
  • Defense drills, like no-hands defense or reaction rebounding

Even for experienced players, fundamental skill practice gives them valuable playing time and allows them to develop new teamwork abilities. As players progress, you can add more difficult variations or additional skills.

3. Incorporate Fun Games and Challenges

Don’t forget about the fun! Pleasurable and exciting activities keep players more engaged and help them develop novel skills. Fun games for basketball camp include:

  • Knockout: A fast-paced shooting game that encourages competition. Two at a time, players compete against each other to be the first to make a free throw shot.
  • Around the World: Shooting challenge that focuses on consistency. Players attempt to be the first to make shots from various points (typically nine) around the court.
  • Dribble Tag: A challenge that improves ball-handling skills while adding excitement. Like in regular tag, the players who are “it” chase the others around the court—while dribbling a ball the entire time.
  • Full-court relay races: An activity encouraging teamwork and speed development. Players assembled into at least two teams complete challenges across the entire court, like shooting, dribbling, or running.

Games are great for working on team-building or cardio exercises. These challenges can also re-engage players after a break.

4. Keep Players Engaged When Teaching

Keeping young players interested and motivated through a long day of basketball practices can be challenging. The more novelty and excitement you can provide, the more engaged most players will be.

We recommend storytelling or theme drills to make learning more fun for younger players. Activities themed after animals or superheroes let kids use their imaginations for both a creative and physical experience. For older players, incorporating music or incentives can keep energy levels high throughout the day.

5. Involve Parents and Local Sponsors

One of the best ways to run a successful basketball camp is to involve all members of the community, not just the kids you want to attend. Parents can be a great asset. Invite them to a skills showcase on the final day of camp to keep them invested in their child’s progress while creating networking opportunities.

You can also encourage local businesses to sponsor the camp. You may gain some funding—and a potentially valuable relationship—and they gain branding opportunities. Consider offering to put the company logo on camp uniforms or other materials in exchange for a donation.

6. Promote Your Basketball Camp Locally

Now that you have ideas for what will happen at camp, how do you get it going? Local promotion helps you reach players and families that want to attend or support you. Promotional opportunities include:

  • Using social media and local school partnerships to spread the word
  • Creating flyers and distributing them through recreation centers, schools, and community organizations
  • Offering early registration discounts or referral incentives to increase sign-ups

A combination of both digital and analog outreach tactics can help you reach the most people and generate excitement about the camp.
