Basketball Parent Meetings: What to Talk About
Parent meetings serve two purposes. On one hand, they are an efficient channel for communicating information about your team ahead of the season. On the other, they are an important opportunity for building relationships within the team community. If you can accomplish both these objectives in a meeting, the results will offer you more engaged parents and a stronger team.

Introductions
Start by building relationships. Say hello! Introduce yourself and any support staff for your team. Even if they are not present, give some background about any assistants or managers who will work with your players during the season. Then, give parents and players an opportunity to introduce themselves as well.
Name tags can be an easy way to remember who is who throughout the evening, allowing you to build familiarity and camaraderie with all attendees.
Coaching Philosophy
To set the stage for all the other information you will share, begin by sharing your coaching philosophy. Do you value winning, player development, fun, or something else? Describe your values and how they inform your team goals and teaching style.
Expectations
Setting clear expectations ahead of the season keeps everyone on the same page. Outline what you expect from both players and parents. You may indicate team goals here or expectations for game day behavior. Describe what discipline might look like if anyone fails to live up to expectations.
Playing Time
One of the most common concerns parents have is about playing time. Get ahead of this conversation by outlining your approach. Explain how you determine playing time and how much time each player might expect on the court. Emphasize your values here and the fairness in your approach.
Logistics
Now that you have set the stage for the underlying philosophy and expectations on your team, it is time to go over some practical details. Outline practice times, game times, and locations. Make a schedule—whether physical or digital—parents can take home with them. At this time, you can also discuss any other logistics, like expected travel or fundraising efforts.
