Picture an ideal basketball game: the crisp swish of balls falling through nets, the squeak of pivoting shoes, the gentle thud of dribbling balls. None of this happens by accident. All the best parts of a basketball game stem from thoughtful preparation beforehand.

How you prep for a basketball game contributes to the whole team’s safety, performance, and enjoyment. Follow these steps with your team as they get ready to play.

1. Practice

Game-day readiness starts well before game day itself. The training and habits you instill in your players all season long show up on the court. Players who are dedicated during practice time will replicate that focus and drive during games.

From conditioning exercises to shooting drills, effective basketball team practice strategies are the best form of long-term preparation you can establish with your team.

2. Sleep Well

Sleep is one of the best regulators of well-being—and most teenagers are not getting enough of it. Teens should regularly get 8 to 10 hours of sleep, while school-aged children should get 9 to 12 hours.

Encourage a good night’s sleep on game-day eve. If kids are well-rested heading into a basketball game, they will have better focus, memory, and emotional regulation. Plus, those who are well rested are less likely to get injured during intense physical activity.

3. Fuel Right

Food is fuel for an athlete. What a player eats in the days and hours before a game will contribute to their success. The night before a game, athletes benefit from a satisfying dinner with plenty of carbohydrates. On game day, a balanced meal two to three hours before tip-off helps players stay full and focused.

Proper hydration before, during, and after a game also aids in digestion, recovery, and performance.

4. Warm Up

You know the refrain: Never play on cold muscles. Pre-game stretching and warm-up drills protect players from injury while tapping into established muscle memory from practice time.

5. Mentally Focus

With the body ready, it is time to get the mind ready too. Mental focus can be one of the most difficult skills for athletes to hone, yet it is one of the most vitally important come game day. Even Olympians rely on techniques like mindfulness to play their best.

Mental preparation for youth athletes can include mindfulness. It might also look like positive self-talk, goal setting, or other ways to tune out distractions. Remind players that confidence comes from preparation. When they focus on what they can control (effort, teamwork, perspective), they play their best.

6. Have a Routine

Each of these game-day preparation steps is important—and they are much easier to achieve with a solid routine. As a coach, you can help your players establish a routine. Team dinners or pre-game curfews are two commonly used techniques for encouraging a good routine.

In the moments before a game, a pre-game routine or ritual can increase team motivation. A locker room pep talk, team huddle, or spirited chant can help players feel connected and focused as they walk onto the court.
